Free Pitching

I shudder at the expression “Free pitching”.

It is very interesting to see the designers’ views in this debate.
Chatting with my friends (designers or not) about this issue, the main outcome reinforces that “free pitching” could be the wrong terminology.

What my friends and I agree on is that for any job, we have to apply for it.

“Free pitching” should be made very clear from the outset, i.e. a good design brief, the budget, specifications and portfolio.

Does this ring a bell?

Job applications?

Anyone applying for a job would normally receive job application pack with pertinent information, e.g.; a job description (= design brief), salary (= budget), person specification; essential and desirable (= design specifications) and experience (= portfolio).

From that information, we decide if it is appropriate to apply for the job. Without it, it would be like applying for a job you know nothing about!

With regard to GLA’s “free pitching” there was very little information to go on to decide if you should go for it or not.

I would do “free pitching” if the design brief is clear, I know that I can achieve the desired outcome and deliver it knowing what the client is trying to achieve and if I have the relevant expertise to guide them to a “meaningful design based around some pretty creative work” (Chief Executive, Christian Schroeder, Lambie-Nairn).

On the other hand there are people who can talk the talk can’t walk the walk. A good pitch is only the beginning, you have to be able to deliver on your promises.

That’s my twopenn’orth.
